- Title:
- Board Of Control Offices
- Scope & Content:
- The Board of Control moved in 1810 from 3 Downing Street to Dorset House on the west side of Whitehall. The Crown purchased the premises from the Dorset family under an agreement of 1808. In 1817, the Board of Control moved into premises on the east of Cannon Row, Parliament Street, which had been built the previous year for the Transport Office. After the abolition of the East India Company and the Board of Control under the India Act of 1858, the building was used to house the India Office Library. It subsequently became the office of the Civil Service Commissioners, before being demolished to form the site of Scotland Yard. The papers for Cannon Row include four Chancery cases: (a) Anne Lloyd versus Henry Porter and his wife Anne [L/L/2/1384-1386]. In March 1682 Bevis Lloyd executed a bond, in the form of a statute staple, to William Killingworth and Henry Halstead (in trust for Anne Lloyd) for £10,000 as security for payment of £250 per annum to Anne Lloyd as a jointure. In 1699 Anne Lloyd had only received £100 for the past 10 years and then took an action against Henry Porter and his wife Anne who was the daughter of Evan Lloyd, son and heir of Bevis Lloyd. (b) William Benford versus David De Mollin De Montagny [L/L/2/1398-1400]. Benford claimed repayment of £400 mortgage loan plus arrears of interest payments owed to him by De Montagny and complained that the mortgaged properties had been allowed to fall into disrepair. (c) Benford versus John James Stephani, John Francis Fresin, Abel Rocayrol and Peter Augustus Samson; Peter Augustus Samson versus William Benford, James Cutler, David De Mollin De Montagny, John James Stephani, John Francis Fresin, Abel Rocayrol. Settlement of David De Mollin De Montagny's affairs. [L/L/2/1401-1404]. (d) John Bayley and his wife Elizabeth versus Joseph Hodges, executor of John Shaw of Wrexham Denbighshire deceased [L/L/2/1426-1430]. John Shaw held ground with twelve houses in Channel Row and Dorset Court for the residue of the term for 1000 years which had commenced in 1652. The will settled the estate on Joseph Hodges to hold in trust for Shaw's wife for life, and at her death the property was to be sold and all Shaw's outstanding debts to be paid. Shaw named as residuary legatee his niece Elizabeth Shaw, who later married John Bayley. The action against Hodges was taken because he neither assigned the estate to the Bayleys nor sold it as directed in Shaw's will.
