- These notebooks and loose papers contain a wide range of autograph material with records of household expenditure and finances; diary entries (including some relating to fishing trips); poetry and prose drafts (often of untitled material) and notes on literary projects; astrological charts and notes on different subjects made by Hughes as part of what appears to have been research on a wide range of subjects including different religions, historical figures and events. Some accounts of Hughes's dreams recorded in the form of dream diaries are also included together with names and contact details of individuals, and some biographical writings and reflections by Hughes on his personal life. Brief notes written by people other than Hughes can also be found in a small number of volumes, these include his first wife, Sylvia Plath and their son, Nicholas.

- The notebooks contain notes on different subjects as well as reflections, self analysis and diary entries. The notebooks were used to record such information at random i.e. not systematically and therefore whilst dates are given where known it has not been possible to date all the material and researchers should be aware that nearly all the notebooks could contain material dating from a wide time frame. Where possible identifiable dates have been noted on slips of paper attached to the individual notebooks.
