For contralto and string orchestra. Autograph vocal score, copyist's full score, and published parts signed by Kathleen Ferrier, all of which are entitled (emphasis added) 'Four Poems by St Teresa of Avila'.
Text by St Teresa of Avila (translated from the Spanish by Arthur Symons):
- (1) 'If Lord, Thy Love for me is strong' (Moderato);
- (2) 'Shepherd, Shepherd hark that calling!' (Allegro);
- (3) 'Let mine eyes see Thee' (Andante);
- (4) 'Today a shepherd and our kin' (Allegro moderato).
First performance: London, Broadcasting House, 4 April 1948. Kathleen Ferrier (contralto) and the Goldsborough String Orchestra, cond. Arnold Goldsborough.
First concert performance: London, Royal Festival Hall, 6 April 1952. Kathleen Ferrier (contralto) and London Symphony Orchestra, cond. Hugo Rignold.
