This sub-series consists of three folders of copies of telegrams mostly sent from the Secretaries to the Government of India Foreign, Home, and Military Departments to various individuals, and a register volume in which the telegrams were recorded.
Copy telegrams from G.F. Edmonstone, Secretary, Government of India Foreign Department, Calcutta, relate to subjects including appointments to posts and the movements and actions of rebels, and are addressed to various individuals, including:
Sir John Lawrence, Chief Commissioner of the Punjab; Chief Secretary to the Government of Madras; Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow; Major C. Davidson, Resident, Baroda; Lieutenant Colonel H.M. Durand, Indore; Mr G.C. Plowden, Nagpore; J.P. Grant, Lieutenant Governor of the Central Provinces, Benares; and Mr Chester, Commissioner of Allahabad.
Copy telegrams from Cecil Beadon, Secretary, Government of India Home Department, Calcutta, relate to subjects including the movements and actions of rebels and instructions to military and civil officials, and are addressed to various individuals, including:
Chief Secretary to the Government of Bombay; Mr Riddell, Director General of Port Offices, Bagoda, and Shergotty; J.R. Colvin, Lieutenant Governor of the North-West Provinces; Lord Harris, Governor of Madras; Mr C.K. Dove, Port Master General of Bengal, Raneegunge; Mr Riddell, Director General of Port Offices; Mr H.C. Tucker, Commissioner of Benares; Commissioner of Patna; Lieutenant Stewart, Raneegunge, Benares, and Allahabad; Mr Chester, Commissioner of Allahabad; Magistrate of Monghyr; Lieutenant Staunton, Shergotty, and Dehree; and Lieutenant Colonel Strachey [or Strachy], Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of the Central Provinces, Benares, and Allahabad.
Copy telegrams from Colonel R.J.H. Birch, Secretary, Government of India Military Department, Calcutta, relate to subjects including the provision of supplies and troop movements, and are addressed to various individuals, including:
Secretary to the Government of Madras Military Department; Officer Commanding at Benares; Colonel Neill, Commanding at Allahabad; Lieutenant Staunton, Shergotty; Commissioner of Nagpore; Lieutenant General Sir J. Outram, Dinapore, Benares, and Allahabad; Officer Commanding at Benares; J.P. Grant, Lieutenant Governor of the Central Provinces, Benares; Commissioner of Nagpore; and Sir John Lawrence, Chief Commissioner of the Punjab, Lahore.
The telegrams in each folder were originally contained in numbered bundles, each with a labelled board on the top and a board on the bottom of the bundle. The telegrams were each assigned a running number, and this number was written either on the reverse of the copy telegrams or on a piece of paper wrapped around the telegram, along with who the message was from, who the message was addressed to, the date, and the subject of the message.
