Papers Filed in Lettered Pigeon Holes
- Scope & Content:
-
Series of miscellaneous personal papers, including those relating to Charles Canning's political positions as Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, as Commissioner for Woods and Forests, and as Postmaster General. Many of the bundles are marked 'F.O.' for Foreign Office.
These papers appear not to have been in India, and were originally kept in bundles in a cabinet with lettered pigeon holes. Over the years, many of the bundles have been removed from their original alphabetical order. As many of the bundles have original wrappers, an attempt has been made to reorder the papers and replicate their original alphabetic arrangement.
Some papers belonging to Lord Clanricarde which were filed together amongst the Pigeon Hole papers have been transferred to the Clanricarde Papers (Add MS 89177).
Other Pigeon Hole papers belonging to Charlotte Canning have been transferred to her papers, and consist of items relating to nursing and the Crimean War (Mss Eur F699/2/3) and correspondence relating to Maria Asmar (Mss Eur F699/2/6/1).
