Personal Papers of Charles Canning
- Scope & Content:
-
Personal papers belonging to Charles Canning, originally contained in a series of chests, despatch boxes and lettered pigeon holes. Contains both material returned from India in 1862, and material that remained in England, being amalgamated with the India papers at a later date.
Papers relate to Charles Canning's role in British Politics in the 1840s and 1850s prior to his appointment as Governor General of India in 1855, and include information on foreign and international political affairs, as well as the running of the Post Office. There is a great deal of overlap between sequences relating to British politics and International Affairs, as well as between papers originally kept in Pigeon Holes. Additionally, papers relate to personal and family affairs.
India material includes items from a despatch box marked 'Peshawar', and material relating to Peshawar and the Punjab have been kept together. Other India related material has also been arranged together, and includes household accounts, as well as a sequence of letters written by Charlotte Canning to Charles Canning whilst on journeys to the Nilgiri Hills in Madras, from Allahabad to Calcutta, whilst staying at Barrackpore, travelling from Simla to the Himalayas and down the Ganges to Calcutta, as well as from her final trip to Darjeeling. These letters have been transferred from Charlotte Canning's papers (Mss Eur F699/2).
