First performed at the Bijou Theatre, Paignton, Devon, 30 Dec 1879 (a single 'copyright performance') before opening at Fifth Avenue Theatre, New York, from 31 Dec 1879 to 5 Jun 1880 (100 performances). First London production, Opera Comique, from 3 Apr 1880 to 2 Apr 1881 (363 performances).

Autograph full score (photostats); 'Children's Version' (Cellier); vocal scores; annotated libretti; instrument parts; and an arrangement for two pianos (Buckley).
