- The oldest part of the building was erected by the East India Company in 1725 on the site of: (a) House in Leadenhall Street and tenement in Lime Street adjoining its back gate, formerly occupied by Sir Henry Garway and by Thomas Atkins, Alderman., purchased in 1709 from the second Baron Craven [L/L/2/5-7]; (b) Two houses adjoining the Earl of Craven's capital messuage in Leadenhall Street to the west and east purchased in 1712 from Thomas Marshall. (i) House to the west, known as the Blackamoor and Camel or the Bell, sold by Henry Powle to the Earl of Craven in 1636, and subsequently leased to Robert Palmer in 1663. (ii) House to the east, known as the Ship, with a piece of ground at the rear, sold by the Turners' Company to the Earl of Craven in 1670 [L/L/2/8-11]. The East India Company demolished the house in 1723.
