- In 1858 the powers and duties of the East India Company were transferred to the Crown and in September the first Secretary of State for India moved into East India House. Whilst awaiting the completion of the new India Office being built at Whitehall, the Secretary of State moved in the autumn of 1860 to temporary accomodation in Victoria Street. East India House was put up for sale in June 1861 and a tender for £155,000 was accepted from the East India House Association, a syndicate headed by John Pemberton Heywood, William Tite and Thomas Brassey. The building was demolished soon afterwards and new offices erected. The site was acquired for redevelopment by Lloyd's in 1923.
