- Scope & Content:
- Property purchased in August 1787 by James Hunter of Seething Lane, hop merchant, from Mary Hanbury of Stoke Newington Middlesex, widow of Capel Hanbury, and Hannah Plumstead of Upper Clapton Middlesex, granddaughters of John Lunn. Two freehold houses, 10 and 11 Seething Lane, were pulled down and warehouses built on the site by Hunter. Hunter entered into an agreement with East India Company in June 1793 to grant a lease for 21 years on three stacks of warehouses then occupied by the Company. The leasehold stack on the west side of Seething Lane was mortgaged by James Hunter to Messrs Down, Thornton and Free for £3,000. Part of the purchase money paid by the East India Company was used to discharge the mortgage.
