The 'Shipping' files consist of six surviving files containing correspondence dating mainly from the 1930s and 1940s, about the passage of shipping in the Persian Gulf. The majority of the correspondence is between the Political Agent, Bahrain; the Senior Naval Officer, Persian Gulf; and the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf.
There are several major topics discussed in the correspondence:
- the appointment of an agent for the Eastern Steam Navigation Company (IOR/R/15/2/551);
- the use of Sharjah as a port of call by British India Steam Navigation Company ships (IOR/R/15/2/552);
- Japanese shipping activities in the Gulf (IOR/R/15/2/553);
- Italian shipping activities in the Gulf (IOR/R/15/2/554);
- German shipping activities in the Gulf (IOR/R/15/2/555);
- the operation of American shipping companies in the Gulf (IOR/R/15/2/556).
