The Al Khalifah subject files from 1931 contain correspondence and other papers relating to the Al Khalifah ruling family of Bahrain. The principal correspondents across these files are: the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf (Lieutenant-colonel Sir Trenchard Craven Fowle; Lieutenant-Colonel William Rupert Hay); the Political Agent at Bahrain (Cornelius James Pelly; Captain Tom Hickinbotham); and the Adviser to the Government of Bahrain, (Charles Dalrymple Belgrave).

Subjects covered by the files include:

• the recognition of Shaikh Hamad bin Isa al Khalifah as Ruler of Bahrain (IOR/R/15/2/801);
• the appointment of the heir apparent to Shaikh Hamad (IOR/R/15/2/802);
• the health and death of Shaikh Hamad and succession of a new Ruler (IOR/R/15/2/805);
