The sub-sub-series 'Naval and Shipping' covers the movements, facilities, protocols, and regulation of shipping at Muscat, other Omani ports, and within the Persian Gulf. Subjects covered by the file, include:

• Movements of British Naval vessels and officers
• Movements of foreign vessels
• Visits of ships and officers to Muscat
• Development of naval facilities at Khor Kuwai
• Survey of the Kuria Muria Islands
• Persian territorial limits and the activities of Persian ships
• Establishment and maintenance of lighting services.

The papers consist largely of correspondence. This correspondence is mainly between: the Political Agent, Muscat; the Political Residency in the Persian Gulf, Bushire (later Bahrain); the Government of India, External Affairs Department; the India Office; the Foreign Office; the Admiralty; and the Sultan of Muscat and Oman, and his representatives. Further correspondence comes from the Persian Government, the Political Agency in Bahrain, the Political Residency in Aden, and a number of companies and organisations with an interest or presence in Oman.
