Peter Nichols directed the first performance by the Show of Strength Theatre Company at Quakers Friars, Bristol, on 25 Nov. 1995. Subsequently performed at the Richmond Theatre, London from 23 Sept. 1996. The play was nominated for the Writers’ Guild Award and also earned Peter Nichols a nomination for the Lloyds Private Banking Playwright of the Year Award. For the deposit copy of the playscript, see PS. 7338. The second act is set in the Lord Chamberlain’s office in St. James’ Palace and is inspired by Peter Nichols’s experiences of the licensing of ‘A Day in the Death of Joe Egg’ in 1967.
