First performed on 1 April 1971 at the Greenwich Theatre, subsequently transferring to the Apollo Theatre, London, on 28 April. Voted Best Play by the Variety Poll of London Critics. It premiered in the United States at the Long Wharf Theatre, New Haven, CT, in April 1973, and this production was filmed and transmitted by WNET television.
