HARDWICKE PAPERS. Vols. CCCCLXXXII.- CCCCLXXXIV. Miscellaneous State letters and papers collected by Philip Yorke, 2nd Earl of Hardwicke (ob. 1790); 1425-1625. They include (a) many original letters written by Queen Elizabeth, Sir William Cecil, and others, to Sir Nicholas Throckmorton, Ambassador in France 1559-1564, with drafts or copies of his own letters; and (b) drafts of offcial letters of Sir Edward Conway, Secretary of State 1622-1625, to various Ambassadors abroad, and on domestic affairs, etc. A selection of them was printed in Lord Hardwicke's Miscellaneous State Papers, 1778, and the Throckmorton correspondence was used by Dr. Patrick Forbes in A Full View of the Public Transactions in the reign of Qu. Elizabeth, 1741. Dr. Forbes states (vol. ii., prof.) that Sir Arthur Throckmorton, son of Sir Nicholas, entrusted his father's letters to Sir Henry Wotton, who bequeathed them to King Charles I., with a view to their being deposited in the Paper Office, but that by some means they fell into private hands and, when he (Forbes) used them, were in the possession of Nicholas Hardinge, Clerk of the House of Commons, and of Alexander Strahan, of Hampstead. Hardinge's library was sold in 1759 and Strahan's in 1767, when probably they were acquired by Lord Hardwicke, Three volumes. Paper. Folio. Vol. I. (ff. 231), 1425-1561 ; Vol. II. (ff. 34,5), 1562-1599; Vol. III. (ff. 201), 1615-1625.
