- Hardwicke Papers, Vol. 484. Miscellaneous State Letters, Vol. III, 1615-1625
- Scope & Content:
-
This is one of three volumes of Miscellaneous State Papers, Add MSS 35830-35832, covering the period 1425-1625, a subset of the massive collection of Hardwicke Papers in the British Library (Add MSS 35349-36278): Correspondence and collections of the first four Earls of Hardwicke and other members of the Yorke family in the 18th and 19th centuries. The three volumes were evidently collected by Philip Yorke, 2nd Earl of Hardwicke, who drew on them for his Miscellaneous State Papers: from 1501-1726, 2 Vols (London: Printed for W. Strahan and T. Call, 1778).
The main part of this volume covers the years 1620-1625, the principal events referred to being: (a) the special embassy of Sir Edward Conway and Sir Richard Weston in 1620 to Brussels and elsewhere 'for the diverting of those princes which ar now in armes from making any invasion or doing any hostile act upon the Palatinate' (f. 11r); (b) the journey of Prince Charles and the Duke of Buckingham, in 1623, to Spain, to arrange the match between the former and the Infanta, and the simultaneous efforts of the Spanish Ambassadors at London to secure toleration for the Catholics in England; (c) the negotiations of Sir Robert Anstruther, Ambassador to Denmark, in 1624-1625, to win over King Christian IV. to the Protestant League against the House of Austria, and to allay the mutual jealousies of that King and Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden; (d) the remonstrance made in Feb 1625, by James I, after signing the Articles for the French match, against the new demands of Louis XIII.
Much of the volume relates to Sir Edward Conway - his mission with Sir Richard Weston over the Palatinate in 1620 - and many documents are either copies or drafts of his letters that he wrote or that he received as Secretary of State (from 30 Jan 1623): many of the letters are evidently his routine correspondence, 21 - 26 Feb 1623 and 1 Jan - 28 Feb 1625.

Provenance:
This is one of three volumes of Hardwicke Papers, Miscellaneous State letters and papers collected by Philip Yorke, 2nd Earl of Hardwicke (d. 1790), 1425-1625 (Add MSS 35830-35832; Hardwicke Papers 482-484).
Descended to Charles Philip Yorke [nicknamed Champagne Charlie], 5th Earl of Hardwicke (1836–1897), landowner and bankrupt dandy, and following his death and succession by Albert Edward Philip Henry Yorke, 6th Earl of Hardwicke (1867–1904), politician, sold by auction to the British Museum, 1899. The spine of the book described this volume as 'Presented by the Earl of Chichester' but this seems to be an error, conflating the Newcastle correspondence given by the latter with the (in terms of 18th-century political correspondence) related Hardwicke archive.
