This file contains correspondence between the Residency Agent at Bahrain prior to the establishment of the position of Assistant Political Agent and subsequently Political Agent; the British Political Resident in the Persian Gulf at Bushire; Shaikh ‘Īsá bin ‘Alī Āl Khalīfah, ruler of Bahrain; Arthur John Hughes, Super-Intendent of Post Offices, Karachi and Persian Gulf Division; various engineers, including J W Storrs, Hugh Wray and C A De Souza.
These papers concern the building of Postmaster's quarters (1902/3) and a Post Office independent of the British Political Agency at Bahrain (1908). Included are details of expenditure and procurement of material and labour; information concerning the structure of the postal service in Bahrain; and the appointments of postmasters in Bahrain. Also included are various architectural plans (ff 35, 41, 43, 76, 81A, 90C, 156 and 160B) and receipts for masonary purchased from local merchants (ff 166B-166J).

Foliation: The foliation sequence is written in pencil, in the top right corner of the recto of each folio. It begins on the first folio with typewritten text, on number 1A, and ends on the last folio with text, on number 227. It should be noted that the following numbers are missing from the sequence: 3, 5, 11, 14, 16, 18, 21, 23, 27, 29, 32, 34, 36, 40, 42, 46, 51, 61, 70, 75, 77, 79, 95, 98, 100, 124, 126, 129, 133, 136, 144, 147, 165, 170, 174, 194, 207, 209, 211 and 216. There are the following foliation anomalies: 1A and 1B; 47A, 47B and 47C; 75A; 77A; 81A and 81B; 90A, 90B and 90C; 100A; 110A and 110B; 160A and 160B; 166A-J; 167A and 167B. Folios 45, 47A, 47B and 47C appear out of sequence but have been digitised in the correct numerical order.
