- Title:
- File 4/5 Dollar Exchange Compensation - Correspondence re -
- Scope & Content:
-
The file relates to the calculation of Dollar Exchange Compensation, a salary allowance for employees of the Government of India serving in Bahrain (also spelled Bahrein) that had originally been granted in 1918 on account of a significant rise in the cost of living and the adverse exchange rate caused by the First World War. The papers contain a record of the market prices each month of the nine principal articles of food in Bahrain for the period April 1926 to June 1935 inclusive, and the monthly dollar/rupee exchange rates in Bahrain for the same period.
The correspondence consists of letters from Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo [Yūsuf bin Aḥmad Kanoo], Bahrein, listing the prices of the articles of food and the dollar - rupee exchange rates each month, at the request of the Political Agent, Bahrain; correspondence from the office of the Political Agent, Bahrain, passing on the details of the food prices and exchange rates to the Secretary to the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, and other Government officials; correspondence between the Political Agent, Bahrain and the Controller of Military Accounts, Quetta, giving the dollar/rupee exchange rates at Bahrain in 1913 and 1914, August 1926; and correspondence concerning a request from the Secretary to the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf for the local market prices at Bahrain of approximately sixty imported articles, including completed price lists supplied by four Bahrain merchants, April - May 1935.
The Arabic language content of the file consists of letterheads in correspondence sent by Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo and one of the other local merchants mentioned above.
