Foreign Letters from India Jan 1874

Scope & Content:

This volume contains copies of Political Despatches, plus two General Despatches and one Secret Despatch, from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dating from January and February 1874.

The Despatches usually consist of a covering letter followed by enclosures (mostly copies of correspondence). Some of the Despatches include an abstract of contents after the covering letter, and there is more than one copy of most of the Despatches.

The Despatches are numbered and dated, and are usually also stamped with the date they were received.

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio with 1 and terminates at the last folio with 273a; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers, nor does it include the leading and ending flyleaves.

The sequence contains 85 foliation insertion anomalies (e.g. 1a, 4a etc.).

The Political Despatches are arranged numerically by Despatch number (and chronologically) from the front to the rear of the volume, with a few other types of Despatch - two General and one Secret - interspersed throughout the volume.
