This item consists of copies of a Political Despatch from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dated 9 January 1874, forwarding correspondence of the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf with: the Government of India; Government of Bombay [Mumbai]; the First Assistant Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; and the Officer Commanding HM despatch vessel May Frere, Bombay Marine. The correspondence relates to the level of protection enslaved persons are entitled to receive on board British ships. The final Enclosure (No. 6), from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf contains provisional instructions on the subject, but as indicated by the covering letter of the despatch, since the question involves important considerations of international law, the correspondence is referred to HM Government.
