Title:

‘Foreign Letters from India Sep & October 1874.’

Scope & Content:

This volume contains copies of Political, General, Finance, Revenue, and Military Despatches from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dating from September and October 1874.

The despatches usually consist of a covering letter followed by enclosures (mostly copies of correspondence). Some of the despatches include an abstract of contents after the covering letter, and there is more than one copy of most of the despatches. Four of the items consist of copies of enclosures to despatches without the covering letters of the despatches.

The despatches are numbered and dated, and the date they were received is often written or stamped on them, and sometimes the date a reply was sent is written on them.

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio with 1 and terminates at the last folio with 469a; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers, nor does it include the leading and ending flyleaves. The sequence contains one foliation omission anomaly, missing out f 51. There are 122 foliation insertion anomalies (e.g. 1a, 4a etc.).
