‘ARAB TRIBES OF THE BAGHDAD WILAYAT’

The volume is entitled Arab Tribes of the Baghdad Wilayat [vilayet], and is a British intelligence document on the tribes living in the area around the city of Baghdad. It was compiled in July 1918 by the Arab Bureau, Baghdad (the Arab Bureau was a section of the Cairo Intelligence Department established in 1916). The report was printed in 1919 by Superintendent Government Printing, Calcutta [Kolkata], India. The majority of the information is presented within inconsistently arranged tables. The information given about each tribe varies, but usually includes:
- Name of tribe (written in English and Arabic)
- Leaders and notable personalities of each tribe
- Locations
- Number of men and houses associated with the tribe
- Clans within the tribe (sometimes referred to as sections, sub-sections, or sub-divisions)
- Other descriptive information about the tribe, including: agricultural and economic activities; history; relations with other tribes; relations with the British military; and languages spoken.
The volume also contains diagrams displaying the lineage of particularly notable individuals and tribes, and an alphabetical index of tribes.
