An official publication entitled A Note on the Transport of Southern and Eastern Persia compiled in the Division of the Chief of the Staff, produced by the Division of the Chief of the Staff, Army Head Quarters, India, and dated 1908.
The volume contains information on the different methods of transport available in southern and eastern Persia [Iran] and was compiled by Captain C M Gibbon during a journey through the region.
It begins with a preface written by Lieutenant-Colonel Wilfrid Malleson, Assistant Quartermaster-General of the Intelligence Branch of the Indian Army General Staff. The volume provides a general description of the climate and transport infrastructure of Persia, and the customs and attributes of Persian ‘caravanmen’. The main body of the volume focuses on the camels, mules, ponies, donkeys, and horses used for transport in Persia, and includes information on acquiring and caring for these animals, as well as the equipment and marching methods typically utilised by their riders.
An index and a glossary of terms are also included.
The volume was printed in Simla [Shimla] at the Government Monotype Press.
