This file consists of a report written by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Edward Stewart in the Bengal Staff Corps relating to the situation of the Tekeh Turkomans on the north-eastern frontier of Persia. The file is divided into ten chapters which follow Stewart's geographical journey across the frontier chronologically. The following elements, which relate to Stewart's journey, are discussed in the note:
- his arrival in Persia and decision to disguise himself as an Armenian horse dealer
- the weather
- geological features
- food supplies
- water availability
- poppy cultivation
- the activities of the Biluchi [Baluchi] tibes
- imports and exports (including tobacco)
- descriptions of several villages in the region, with particular attention given to Tabbas
- recruitment of soldiers for the Persian army
- roads, trails and pathways in the area, including detailed routes for travel from Persia to 'the Merv country'
- Turkoman slave-raiding
- Turkoman tribal divisions, locations and horses
- the siege of Geok Tepe by the Russians
- description of Daragez [Dargaz]
- stopover at Mashad
- history of attempts to subdue Merv Tekeh.
The report was printed in London by the Mobilization and Intelligence Department in the War Office. It was previously marked confidential.
