This manuscript is now bound in two volumes, Cotton Vitellius C XII/1 and Cotton Vitellius C XII/2 (previously Cotton MS Vitellius C XII part 1 and Cotton MS Vitellius C XII part 2).
Cotton Vitellius C XII/1 includes:
ff 1-113: the Historia tripartita, copied in the early 14th century;
ff 114-156: Usuard's Martyrologium and confraternity notes copied at St Augustine's Canterbury in the very late 11th or early 12th century.
Cotton Vitellius C XII/2 includes:
f 157: a letter of Pope Innocent III to the bishops of Ely, London, and Worcester;
ff 158-228: a life of Thomas Becket (Quadrilogus II);
ff 229-235: De indulgencia apud assisium, Coronatio Edwardi secondi, La maniere comment le roy sera coronee;
ff 236-291: Aelred of Rievaulx's Life of St Edward the Confessor, Edward Grim's Life of Thomas Becket archbishop of Canterbury, and a Life of Edmund Rich, archbishop of Canterbury.

Foliation: ff. i + 291; Cotton Vitellius C XII/1 has ff. i-156 (where f. I is an early modern endleaf + 2 unfoliated modern paper flyleaves at the beginning and 1 at the end); Cotton Vitellius C XII/2 has ff. 157-291 (+ 1 unfoliated modern paper flyleaf at the beginning and 2 at the end).
Binding: BM/BL inhouse, rebound in 1964 in two volumes: Cotton MS Vitellius C XII/1 (formerly Cotton MS Vitellius C XII part 1, containing ff. i, 1–156) and Cotton MS Vitellius C XII/2 (formerly Cotton MS Vitellius C XII part II, containing ff. 157–291)
- Custodial History:
- Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
