This is a composite manuscript, containing texts made between the early 11th and late 12th century. These include:
ff. 1-105: a calendar, Latin-Old Cornish glossary, documents pertaining to Wales, and lives of Welsh saints ('Vita Sanctorum Wallensium'), which was copied in the 2nd half of 12th century, possibly in Wales;
ff. 106-113: excerpts from Bede, Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum, Gilbert Crispin, De spiritu sancto, and an Altercatio inter Urbanum et Clementem, copied in England in the mid-12th century;
ff. 114-179: letter-book of Wulfstan (d. 1023), bishop of Worcester and archbishop of York, including letters by Alcuin and others. It was copied in England, with annotations and additions which may be in Wulfstan's own hand, in the first quarter of the 11th century.

Foliation: fos. 1* + 179 (where 1* and the preceding unfoliated parchment folio are early modern endleaves, + 5 other unfoliated, modern paper flyleaves at the beginning and 2 at the end).

John Selden (b. 1584, d. 1654), lawyer and historical and linguistic scholar: copied extracts and described, suggesting they were joined by 1618 (see Selden, Historie of Tithes (1618), pp. 217, 218, 250, 261, 276, 277; Tite, 'Early Records' (2003), p. 174).
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician: inscribed with his name (ff. 1r, 114r).
Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
