This is a composite manuscript composed of fragments bound together in the early modern period. These include:
f. 1r-v: early modern table of contents;
f. 2r: blank, apart from the inscriptions 'Mitte nob. hist. bede de gestis anglor[um]' (in a 12th-century hand) and 'Bind this... and put 4 leaves 9... parchment bifos...' (in an early modern hand).

f. 8r: some alphabets;
ff. 8r–v: Dionysius Exiguus, computistical letter addressed to Boniface and Bonus (imperfect);
ff. 9r-v: a fragment of a chronicle in Old English, AD 1113–1114 (imperfect);
f. 10r: a runic alphabet;
f. 10v: blank;
f. 11r: extracts from an Old English translation of Bede, Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum;
f. 11v: a runic alphabet with medieval and early modern notes on the names of the runes;
ff. 12r–16v: some verses on the calendar and other computistical notes;

Dimensions: binding 220 × 140 mm (folios range from 210 x 125 mm).
Foliation: ff. 1* + 109 (where the 5th unfoliated flyleaf and f. 1 are early modern parchment leaves + 4 unfoliated modern paper flyleaves at the beginning and 5 at the end).
Binding: BM/BL in-house, rebound in 1963.

Provenance:
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician: owner. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
