This folio includes extracts from Book 4, 1, and 2 of an Old English translation of Bede's Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum, copied in the last quarter of the 9th century or 1st quarter of the 10th century. A runic alphabet was added to the verso, with names of a few of the runes. In the last quarter of the 11th century or 1st quarter of the 12th century, notes on the names and values of most of the runes were added (see Ker, Catalogue (1957), no. 151). In the 16th century, Robert Talbot added further notes about the runes (f. 11v).
Decoration: Initials in black, filled with yellow and oxidised red, decorated with dots and penwork flourishes (f. 1r).

Origin: England (? Kent or ? St Paul’s Cathedral, London): one of the extracts has been altered so that only the bishop of London, Mellitus, is described being consecrated by St Augustine, whereas in Bede's original text St Augustine consecrates two bishops (see Sisam, Studies in the History of Old English Literature (1953), p. 18 and Whitelock, Some Anglo-Saxon Bishops (1975), pp. 16-17).
