Journal of the East India Company ship Royall James [Royal James] kept by Robertt Ffox [Robert Fox] from England to Surratt [Surat, also written in the journal as Surrat], and back to England between 27 March 1624 and 12 October 1626 (Captains John Weddell and Richard Swanley). The journal employs Old Style (Julian) dates only.
Inscribed (folio 5): "A Journall kept by me Robert Ffox from the Downes to Surratt in the good ship caled the Royall Jamis Capt. John Wedell Com. ouer 4 shipps & 2 pinissis viz the Jamis, Jonas, Star & Eagle, Spy & Scout, whome god priserue. March 27th Ano 1624". It is possible that this copy of the journal was made not by Robert Fox but by a scribe for presentation to the East India Company.
The journal consists of daily entries recording the following: navigational information; weather; sea conditions; consultations; contact with other British ships, country ships, Portuguese ships and Dutch ships; sightings of other vessels; references to the coasts sighted during the voyage. The journal does not record information when the when the ship remains anchored at land on the different stops, just information when it is navigating or anchoring. At the end of each month there is a table of daily entries recording navigational information under the following headings: dayes [days], course, leagues, departures, longitude, E or W, wende [wind] variations, and general remarks.
The ship's route is as follows (dates given are for the arrival unless otherwise indicated): Downs, 27 March 1624 (folio 5); Cape of Good Hope, 17 July 1624 (folio 7); St Larrince [St Lawrence, i.e. Madagascar], 20 August 1624 (folio 7); Mohala [Mohéli, Comoros], 1 September 1624 (folio 8); St Johns [in Surat], 12 October 1624 (folio 10); Daman [Dammam], 19 November 1924; Gombroone [Bandar-e ʻAbbas, also also spelled Combroone in this file], 28 December 1624 (folio 11); Swally [Suvali], 3 February 1625 (folio 12); Batavia [Jakarta], 11 June 1625 (folio 14); Bantum [Banten], 10 August 1625 (folio 15); Surrat, 20 October 1625 (folio 19); Gombroone, 18 November 1625 (folio 18); Surrat, 28 January 1626 (folio 16); Cape [Cape of Good Hope], 8 July 1626 (folio 25); St Hellena [Saint Helena], 6 August 1626 (folio 26).
