1. ff. 1-25. ‘The Ballad of Freedom’s Soldier’ (words, John Manifold, incorporating a poem by Khristo Botev), cantata for tenor and bass-baritone soloists, mixed chorus and orchestra, op.44; [1953]. Vocal score, in ink, with performance annotations in pencil. ‘Dedicated to the memory of Major Frank Thompson, British Military Mission, National Hero of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria’ (f. 2).
2. ff. 26-7. ‘Nicht den Tod aus der Ferne’ (words, Armin Müller), for baritone solo, unison chorus, clarinet, trumpet, percussion and piano; [1958]. Vocal score, in blue ink. German.
3. ff. 28-74. ‘The Ballad of Aldermarston’ (words, Armin Müller, translated by Nancy Bush), for speaker, mixed chorus and instrumental ensemble; 1958. Also entitled ‘Ballad of the March to Aldermarston’ and ‘Ballade vom Marsch auf Aldermaston’.
i. ff. 29-37. ‘Ballade vom Marsch auf Aldermarston’, with accompaniment for 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 guitars, percussion and double bass. Full score, in blue ink. German, with English translation added in pencil. With typewritten copies of the full text in German and of the chorus parts in English (ff. 30-32, 33).
ii. ff. 38-48. ‘The Ballad of Aldermarston’, with accompaniment for 2 clarinets, 3 trumpets, tenor trombone, 3 guitars, piano, percussion and strings. Score, in ink.
