DOCUMENTS RELATING TO THE TREATY OF BRETIGNY; c. 1360-1362. French. Contemporary copies. Purchased by the British Museum at Sir Francis Palgrave's sale, 20 Nov. 1862, lot 86, and numbered Add. 25010. The MS. was returned to Lord Calthorpe by resolution of the Trustees, 17 Feb. 1883; see notes at ff. i, iib.
1. ff. 2-57. The ratification of the Treaty of Bretigny (8 May 1360; IBT, p. 15) between England and France, and related documents; Calais, 24-28 Oct. 1360.
2. ff. 58-76b. Documents relating to the embassy of Thomas de Uvedale and Thomas de Donclent to obtain the transfer of lands and renunciation of sovereignty from the King of France stipulated in the Treaty of Bretigny; 15 Nov. 1361-[16 Feb.-16 March 1362]. Mostly printed in P. Chaplais, 'Anglo-French Negotiations of 1361-1362', Camden 3rd ser., lxxx (Camden Misc., xix), 1952, pp. 5-50. Followed, f. 75b, by a memorandum in French of jewels supplied by John Edmund, goldsmith, to John Lincoln of Grimsby (on whom see A. B. Emden, A Biographical Register of the University of Cambridge to 1500, pp. 368-369); 26 June 1396.
Vellum; ff. ii + 75. 325 x 245mm. c. 1360-1362. Contemporary Roman foliations, i-xxxi (lacking xxvi, xxx) and i-xxxii on ff. 2-30, 31-57. Gatherings, i4(catchword), ii2, iii6, iv8, v6(lacks 6), vi-vii8, viii-ix2, x6, xi4, xii6(lacks 2), xiii10(lacks 6), xiv4, xv2, xvi4. The first eleven gatherings are numbered in Romans (the numbers i, vii and viii lost through cropping); gatherings vii, viii, and x are also numbered 'quaternus primus', 'secundus' and 'quartus'. Written in at least two chancery hands with some decorative penwork and spaces for initials. There is a caricature head on f. 40. 19th cent. British Museum calf binding.
