Scope & Content:: Correspondence and papers chiefly of Robert Beale, Clerk of the Council (b. 1541, d. 1601), together with additions of the 17th century, including manuscripts of Sir Henry Yelverton, Justice of the Common Pleas (b. 1566, d. 1629), Beale's son-in-law, Sir Christopher Yelverton, Justice of the King's Bench (b. 1535, d. 1612), Sir Henry's father, and Henry Yelverton, 15th Lord Grey of Ruthin, 1st Viscount de Longueville, and also a supplementary group (48178-48195) of miscellaneous manuscripts. Catalogued, apart from the last group, in E. Bernard, Catalogi Librorum Manuscriptorum Angliae, vol. ii, 1697, and calendared in Hist. MSS. Comm., 2nd Report, 1871, App., pp. 39-46. See also Brit. Mus. Quart., xix, 1954, pp. 3-9, pls. i-ii. The numeration of volumes given below is that assigned to the manuscripts when in private hands. Some volumes then in the collection, viz. nos. XV, XVIII, XXVIII, XLI, LVI, LXXXIII, XCIV, XCVII, CXII- CXIV, CXXIV, CXXVI, CXXVII, CLXVII, were missing when the collection was received in the Department, but nos. XXII, XXIII are now Stowe MSS. 570, 571. The manuscripts are at present described in a summary manner, but it is proposed that a detailed catalogue of the collection, with index, will eventually be published. One hundred and ninety-seven volumes.
