ECCLESIASTICAL FORMULARY containing commissions, citations, mandates, letters, processes, proxies, etc., mostly of or relating to the archbishops of Canterbury, in rough chronological order; 1490-1564, with additions to 1581. Latin. Apparently compiled by or for, successively: John Barrett, notary public, Archbishop Morton's Scribe of the Acts and Registrar, and, from 1501, Archbishop Deane's Registrar of the Prerogative Court, see I. Churchill, Canterbury Administration, 1933, passim; Thomas Argall, priest of Winchester diocese and notary apostolic (see ff. 48, 63b), Registrar of the Prerogative Court temp. Archbishop Parker (cons. 1559), see ibid., p. 613n. Barrett attests many acta from 1490-1518, ff. 2b-47, and Argall attests most of the acta in the latter part of the formulary, 1527-1564. At f. 136b a memorandum that on 30 April 1519 John Rooke and John Harde, attorneys of the abbey of Stratford Langthorne, co. Essex, put John Barrett, Esq., of Aveley, co. Essex, in possession of Bumsted manor in Aveley, is attested by Thomas Argall with his signature and mark. The contents include many instruments connected with Henry VIII's divorce and the submission of the clergy. At ff. 57b-58 is a copy of Archbishop Warham's protestation before notaries public, in an upper chamber of Lambeth Palace, that he would not submit to any Parliamentary statute to the prejudice of ecclesiastical authority, 24 Feb. 1532, which is printed from the present MS. in G. Burnet, History of the Reformation, ed. N. Pocock, 1865, vi, pp. 54-55. This and many other instruments marked with a pencil cross, mostly royal acts and Reformation documents, are transcribed in Add. 48022, ff. 98-184b, where they are preceded by other matter not in the present MS., and with a note by Beale (Add. 48022, f. 83) 'Out of an old booke which I borowed of Mr Saye whose father was Principall Register for Ecclesiastical Causes. June 1588'. However, a 17th cent. note in the present MS., f. 1, referring to Beale's note, describes Saye senior as Registrar of the Lower House of Convocation. The Sayes senior and junior were probably William and Robert, see Registrum Matthei Parker, ed. W. H. Frere, Canterbury and York Soc., xxxv, 1928, p. 125 etc. The contents of the present MS. also include: (a) Accounts of receipts and expenses connected with legal processes; 1502. ff. 2b-4; (b) Articles on behalf of Sir Griffiths Don, captain of the 'Mary John' against Jacques Berenghier, gunner of that ship, sentenced to have his ears slit for sabotage; [1512]. ff. 17-17b. Followed (f. 18) by a copy of letters patent of Archbishop Warham, to the échevins and councillors of Burgen [Mons?], recording the examination in an inner chamber at Greenwich, 17 Jan. 1513, of Admiral Sir Edward Howard, Thomas Pert, William Cooke and John Ischam, concerning the truth of the above articles; with notarial attestation by John Barett and David Cooper, notaries public. For a different account of the Berenghier case, see Cotton MS. Galba B.III, f. 22, a letter of Margaret of Savoy, Regent of the Netherlands, to Henry VIII, 15 Sept. 1512; (c) A copy of Archbishop Warham's summons to bishops of the Province of Canterbury to a general council; 2 Dec. 1518. Printed from the present MS. in N. Pocock, 'Archbishop Warham's abortive council, 1518', EHR, viii, 1893, pp. 297-299. ff. 46b-47; (d) Two inserted leaves from a 15th-cent. register (numbered 'lxxxxii' and 'cxvi') containing part of the divorce proceedings between Sir Adam Fraunceys and Margery Greene, his wife, late 14th cent., and a recitation by Ralph Erghum, Bishop of Bath and Wells, of a dispensation by Pope Boniface IX, 7 Dec. 1398. ff. 99, 102. On f. 1 are verses in a 16th cent. hand:
Marke Well and iudge with upright mynde
The true reportes which here I fynde
So may you see as in a glasse
The uncerteyne state of worldelie masse
As it was said nowe longe agoe
There is omnium rerum vicissitudo.
Paper; ff. ii + 136. A contemporary roman foliation, i-cxlii (lacking vii, xvi, xix, xxiv, xxix, xlii, xlvii, xcvi, cxix, cxx) extends from ff. 1-136. ff. 96, 97, 99 and 102 are inserted leaves. Folio. XV-XVI centt. Belonged probably to John Barrett, Thomas Argall and the Sayes senior and junior. The name 'George Iones' is written on the front cover in a 16th-cent. hand. Contemporary vellum binding, numbered '12' on the spine. A coloured label, letter 'V', on the front cover.
