'DESCRIPTION GENERALLE DE LA COSTE MARITIME DU ROYAUME DE FRANCE EN LA MER OCCEANE': an outline map of the French coast from Calais to S Jean de Luz (approx. scale 4 mm. = 10 miles), followed by 14 charts showing the same coast in sections on a variety of large scales; c. 1627. Attributable to Jean Guérard of Dieppe, or his school, and perhaps part of the preliminary work for the detailed maps of the coast of France produced by Guérard in 1627 (M. Foncin, M. Destombes and M. de la Roncière, Bibliothèque Nationale. Catalogue des cartes nautiques sur vélin . . . , 1963, nos. 145, 146;
A. Anthiaume, Cartes marines . . . chez les Normands 1500-1650, i, 1916,
pp. 192-205, especially pp. 197-200). Coasts, estuaries etc. portrayed generally, not precisely; settlements on or near the coast shown by symbols; scattered soundings. Anchorages marked, also rocks and shallows (the limits of shallows, dots and brown wash, perhaps added a little later than the rest of the work). Large compass roses on ff. 2, 3, on other maps arrows pointing southwards. Ink over pencil (pencil often still visible), and wash in blue, green, red, yellow and combinations.
Paper; ff. i + 17. Folio. c. 1627. Maps mounted on guards, in a 17th-cent. vellum binding; remains of green tapes. Numbered '24' on the spine and back cover; also number '4' at the top of the spine, perhaps a shelf mark. Mentioned in the 1694 catalogue of the Yelverton library, Hargrave MS. 107, f. 76, with marginal note 'wanting'; and no placing given in the shelflist of Yelverton manuscripts (f. 42).
