A contents list (f. iv) refers to ff. 1-61 (ff. 10-64 current foliation, artt. 2-9). One item on this list, 'Francisco Ottomano J. Sturmius [o.f.] 32', is now missing.

Possibly prepared by William Harborne, first English ambassador to Turkey, 1583-1588, when the expenses of his further embassy were under consideration. See: A. C. Beale's signature occurs, f. 13. Made while Beale was employed by the English embassy in Paris, 1564-1572, apparently c. 1566 (f. 11). A marginal dated 1571 occurs, f. 18, also a contemporary foliation, lower r. hand corner,
2-6 (ff. 11-15).

16. ff. 272-278b. Account of Spain and Portugal; c. 1587 (f. 277). Lists archbishops, bishops and nobles of Spain and Portugal with their revenues and gives brief information on the royal revenues, provinces and towns. Particular attention is paid to the rivers, havens and shipping.
17. f. 279. Titles of the King of Spain and the Sultan of Turkey; c. 1587. In the same hand as art. 16.
Paper; ff. vii + 306. Two series of foliation, probably late 16th cent.: (a) 1-10. ff. 1-10; (b) o.f. 1-306, commencing f. 10. Folio. XVI cent. Vellum binding. A bargain and sale dated 10 Feb. 1566 from John, Baron Lumley, to Richard Bellassys, conveying a capital messuage at Ludworth, co. Durham (Ludworth Tower?), has been used as binding strips, ff. i-ii, vi-vii. The dorse of this document has been used for miscellaneous notes and pen trials, 1573 - [early 17th cent?], before the sheet was fixed in the binding. Included are memoranda about linen, possibly for an inventory (f. iib), and accounts for travelling expenses (f. vi). Traces of letter and coloured label on front cover. Spine titled and numbered '30'.
