2. ff. 63-72b. Treatise on the Exchequer; mid 16th cent. Latin and English. Entitled 'The Fourme or patron of a Chessebord declaryng that the kynges eschequer is the most auncyenst court of Record', f. 63. Beg. 'Thys Fygure of a playn chesborde . . . ', f. 64. The writer, who quotes extensively from the Red Book of the Exchequer, proposes reforms and likens the flow of revenue through the Exchequer to the working of a water conduit in a great house (ff. 71-71b). There are two plans: (a) Chessboard, with surrounding Exchequer benches, f. 64; (b) Plan showing the course of revenue in and out of the Exchequer, f. 70b. Other copies of this treatise are Add. 48116, art. 25, and Lansdowne MS. 170, ff. 47-51b, where it is entitled 'A treates of the exchequer beinge the originall courte of the whole realme'. The copy of the plan of the course of the revenue (Lansdowne MS. 170, f. 47b) is headed 'This forme of the Exchequer is in an old booke remayning in the custodie of the Treasorer and Chamberlaynes of the Exchequer, in the Receipt side'.
Paper and (art. 2) vellum; vi + 72. 17th-cent. foliation. Folio. Mid XVI cent. Handwriting: art. 1, one mid 16th-cent. secretary hand; art. 2, one mid 16th-cent. legal hand. In the binding, f. i, is a fragment of a 14th-cent. gloss on Peter's threefold denial of Christ. Vellum binding, titled and numbered '43' on the spine, on which the number '3' is also written. Traces of label on front cover.
