TREATISES RELATING TO PARLIAMENT, etc.; 1484 - early 17th cent. Copies, early 17th cent.
1. ff. 4-33b. 'A Discourse of the High Court of Parliament, and of the Authoritie of the same, collected out of the Common Lawes, and other good authors'; c. 1620-1625 (see description of Add. 48101, art. 1, another copy). Other copies of this tract are Harley MS. 37, ff. 37-60b, where it is attributed (f. 36) to Ralph Starkey (d.1628) and dedicated to Charles, Prince of Wales, Add. MSS. 30197 and 34217, ff. 54-65 and Harley MS. 1128.
2. ff. 34-137. Journal of the Westminster Parliament; Friday 23 Jan. 1 Richard III (1484). Rot. Parl., vi, pp. 237-263. Other copies are: Harley MSS. 18, ff. 3-38b, and 731; Lansdowne MS. 543.
3. ff. 140-170. Journal of the House of Commons by Hayward Townshend, M.P.; 24 Oct. 1597-9 Feb. 1598. Edited by A. F. Pollard and M. Blatcher from Stowe MS. 362, ff. 1-27, in BIHR, xii, 1934-1935, pp. 1-31. The present MS. agrees generally with Stowe 362, with which it appears to be contemporary, but it includes the variants noted in BIHR, ibid., pp. 24-25, nn. 96-98, in the other copies there collated, Cotton MS. Titus F.II, ff. 114-131b and Hargrave MS. 278, ff. 145-172. On Townshend and his journals see further BIHR, xiii, 1935-1936, pp. 9-34, xiv, 1936-1937, pp. 149-165 and xv, 1937-1938, pp. 1-18.
4. ff. 172-200b. Journal of the House of Lords; 24 Oct. 1597-9 Feb. 1598. Printed in H. Townshend, Historical Collections, 1680, pp. 79-99.
5. ff. 202-390b. Journal of the House of Commons by Hayward Townshend; 27 Oct.-29 Dec. 1601. Historical Collections, 1680, pp. 129-336. On this journal see particularly BIHR, xiv, 1936-1937, pp. 149-165, where other MSS. are noted. The present MS. has variants both from the printed version and other MSS.; it lacks the final phrase 'anno Reginae Elizabethae . . . adhuc incompleto' found in several MSS., and also the appendix of M.P.s found in nearly all other MSS., see BIHR, ibid., pp. 150, 154. There are occasional corrections throughout and, on f. 288b, by the beginning of the entry for 25 November, there is a marginal note, 'lefe 39', presumably a reference to the MS. from which the present text was transcribed or corrected. A pointing hand in the margin of f. 289 marks the introduction of an act to enable Edward Nevill, of Burling, co. Kent, and his son Henry, to sell copyhold lands.
6. ff. 392-517b. Abstract of the journal of the House of Lords; 19 March 1604-30 March 1607. By Robert Bowyer (see f. 505). Copies of Lords Journals, 1604-1614, annotated by Bowyer, are Petyt MSS. 537, vol.8, and 538, vol.10, ff. 145-202, see J. C. Davies, Catalogue of Manuscripts in the Library of . . . the Inner Temple, 1972, ii, pp. 623-629, 737-738. See also D. H. Wilson, The Parliamentary Diary of Robert Bowyer, 1931, p. xii and n.2.
7. ff. 520-606. 'An Argument upon the Questions of Imposicions . . . ' by Sir John Davies, Attorney-General for Ireland (d.1626). A. B. Grosart,
Works . . . of Sir John Davies, iii, 1876, pp. 1-146.
