THE FIVE KNIGHTS' CASE, King's Bench; 15-28 Nov. 1627. Also called Sir Thomas Darnell's case, although Sir Thomas Darnell, Bart., withdrew early in the proceedings. The 'five knights', who had been imprisoned on the order of Charles I for refusing to pay the forced loan of 1627, applied for a writ of habeas corpus, and the trial in King's Bench concerned the legality of their imprisonment. State Trials, iii, pp. 2-59.
