REPORTS OF STAR CHAMBER CASES, 1-3 Charles I; 1625-1628. Mostly French. An English translation of the same reports, Lansdowne MS. 620, omits some notes in the present MS., e.g. those recording the adjournments of the court in the Trinity and Michaelmas terms of 1625 because of plague, and the dismissal of John Williams as Lord Keeper in 1625 'sur displeasure le duke de Buckingham (come fuit conceive)' (ff. 8-9). A note by John Lightfoot in Lansdowne MS. 620, f. 39, states that 'I had this Booke of these Reports from Pag. 1o unto pag: From Henry Drye servant to my Brother Francis Phelips the xxvjth day of June Anno domini 1636. And it is not of my owne collection'. Lightfoot and Phelips (perhaps the compiler) may possibly, but uncertainly in view of the former's statement of their relationship, be the John Lightfoot, son of Richard Lightfoot of Stoke Bruerne, co. Northt., who was admitted to Gray's Inn on 30 June. 1617 (J. Foster, Register of Admissions to Gray's Inn, 1521-1589, i, 1889, p. 142), and the Francis Phelips, second son of Sir Edward Phelips, Speaker of the House of Commons, who entered Middle Temple on 29 Oct. 1609 (H. Sturgess, Register of Admissions . . . to the Middle Temple, i, 1949, p. 93).
Paper; ff. iv + 109 + (9*, 29*, 48*). Contemporary foliation, mostly lost through cropping after f. 39. A second contemporary ink foliation starts at the beginning of the reports for 2 Charles I (f. 23). Folio. Temp. Charles I. When acquired, the volume had no binding, the gatherings being roughly sewn together.
