Papers of Robert Beale relating to Elizabethan religious affairs
- Scope & Content:
-
Papers of Robert Beale (1541-1601) relating to Elizabethan religious matters.
This volume is largely a matter of copies, often with headings, notes and corrections by Robert Beale. There are some items which are pre-Reformation precedents, and others which relate to religious authority and to puritanism in the early years of Elizabeth's reign. But the bulk deals with religious conflicts in the 1580s and 1590s, especially the anti-Puritanism of Archbishop Whitgift and the resistance to it (to which Beale was sympathetic), and it is likely that the copies all date from that later period. Apart from a few leaves - mainly additional notes by Beale himself - the copies are made on papers of a uniform size, though in different scribal hands, and the volume was compiled (and probably bound) in Beale's lifetime.

Origin:
England.
Provenance:
Collected by, and probably bound for, Robert Beale (1541-1601), administrator and diplomat (Taviner, 'Robert Beale', p. 39, and fn. which notes the traces of a label on the spine).
From him it passed to his son-in-law Sir Henry Yelverton (b 1566, d 1630), judge and politician. The Yelverton papers descended to Henry Yelverton, 15th Baron Grey of Ruthin. 1st Viscount de Longueville and in due course to his grandson, to Henry Yelverton, 3rd Earl of Sussex, who in 1795 gave them to his cousin Sir Henry Gough-Calthorpe, 2nd Baronet and later first Baron Calthorpe (b 1749, d 1798). The papers remained in his family until Brigadier Richard Hamilton Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe sold the Yelverton papers to the British Museum in 1953.
