1. ff. 2-15. Papers relating to religious reform; temp. Eliz. I. As follows: (a) Tract on the reform of religion, education, justice, etc. Beg. 'It is a lamentable thing to Greave for every man complayneth . . . '. Ends ' . . . he should be able to berde or entercounter his prince.' ff. 2-7b; (b) Proposed parliamentary bill [of Anthony Bridgeman] for the ending of pluralities, the dissolution of cathedral and collegiate churches and redistribution of their revenues, etc.; Feb. 1589. VIII, iv, pt. 3, p. 2620. See also Cambridge Univ. Libr. MS. Dd.3.85, art. 18, a memorandum by Beale on the validity of Brandon's marriage with Mary, Queen Dowager of France.

3. ff. 76-81. Statutes of the Order of the Garter, in English, as altered by Edward VI for presentation to the Chapter of 24 April 1552, but not adopted: one of the several draft revisions preceding the final version adopted 17 March 1553 (and abrogated by Mary I 27 Sept. 1553), on the history of which see E. M. Thompson in Archaeologia, liv, 1894, pp. 173-198. The present copy (which was unknown to Thompson) was made from a copy corrected by the King himself, and reproduces his deletions and, in an italic hand, his additions and amendments, see the preface, f. 76. A Latin draft and two other English drafts by the King are printed in J. G. Nichols, Literary Remains of King Edward the Sixth, Roxburghe Club, 1857, ii,
pp. 511-538, from the autographs, Cotton MS. Nero C.X, ff. 98-112. The Statutes finally adopted (though never put into effect), 17 March 1553, are printed in J. Anstis, Register of the Order of the Garter, 1724, ii, App.

Sylvester, EETS, ccxliii, 1959, based upon the autograph MS. Egerton 2402. Marginal Greek letters show where passages relating to the Boleyns, etc., have been modified and omitted; they are supplied in
art. 5 below, marked with the corresponding letters.

6. ff. 183-188b. Three signet letters (headings by Beale, ff. 183, 184, 186, 188) from Henry VIII to Sir Francis Bryan, ambassador at Blois, concerning the alleged treason of Cardinal Wolsey, and notifying him of Wolsey's death; 11 and 16 Nov., 8 Dec. 1530. Not in LP Hen. VIII, but Bryan's reply to the letter to 11 Nov. is ibid., iv, pt.3, no. 6733.
7. ff. 193, 198-310. Treatise by Nicholas Harpsfield on the divorce of Henry VIII (no title); [c. 1553-1558]. The present MS. is not among the texts collated by N. Pocock for his edition, A treatise on the pretended divorce between Henry VIII and Catharine of Aragon, Camden Soc., n.s., xxi, 1878.
