LETTER-BOOK OR REGISTER OF GIROLAMO ZORZI, Venetian diplomat and statesman, as ambassador to France; 13 Sept. 1485-Oct. 1487. Italian. An alphabetical list of names of people, with some places and subjects, referred to in the letters is on ff. 1-2. For Zorzi's embassy see SP Ven. 1202-1509, pp. 155-170. Besides Zorzi's official letters to the Venetian Senate and Council of Ten, the MS. includes a number of copies and translations of letters and commissions from the King of France, etc., relating to the restitution of some ships and merchandise belonging to Venice, which had been seized by French freebooters. The last dated letter in the MS. was written 24 Sept. 1487 and is followed by an imperfect one apparently written the following month. Concerning the reports and registers of the Venetian ambassadors see A. Baschet, Les Archives de Venise, Paris, 1870, especially part iii, ch.viii: 'Des Ambassades de Venise à la Cour de France et de leurs Dépêches', pp. 292-330. According to Baschet, p. 292, all original despatches from the Venetian ambassadors to France before 1544 were destroyed by fire in 1576 and 1577, but Zorzi's despatch of 13 Sept. 1487 is printed, from a copy, in B. Buser, Beziehungen der Mediceer zu Frankreich, Leipzig, 1879, pp. 516-519.
Paper; ff. i + 72. Contemporary foliation. 319 x 215mm. 1485-1487. Gatherings: i12 (lacks 1, 2), ii-v16. One cursive Italian hand throughout. Sections from the original vellum binding are mounted inside the volume, f. i. On the outside of the front cover is a partly legible inscription, presumably by Zorzi himself, 'Registro di [lettere?] scripte per mi al nostra [eccellentíssima?] signoria quando fui Orator . . . '. Numbered '73' on the spine and [37?] on the back cover.
