DIARY OF PARIS DE GRASSIS; 1513-1521. Latin. Copy, 17th cent. Paris de Grassis, Bishop of Pesaro 1515, was appointed one of the two Masters of Ceremonies to Pope Julius II on 26 May 1504. His senior colleague was the liturgist and rubricist John Burchard, who kept a diary as Master of Ceremonies from 1483 till his death in 1506 and de Grassis followed his example, beginning with his own appointment. The present MS. covers only the reign of Pope Leo X but a complete text of the diary is Add. MSS. 8440-8444. Extracts from this part of the diary were published by M. Armellini (Il Diario di Leone X di Paride de Grassi, Rome, 1884) and there are excerpts from it in J. Mabillon and M. Germain, Museum Italicum, ii, 1687 and C. G. Hoffmann, Nova scriptorum ac monumentorum . . . Collectio, 1731. See further E. Bishop, Liturgica Historica, Oxford, 1918, pp. 434-443. De Grassis wrote mainly as a ceremonialist and the MS. includes details of: the conclave and coronation of
Leo X. ff. 1-14b; sessions of the Lateran Council of 1512-1517. ff. 25-26b, 34b-36, 62b-64, 77b-79b, 89-91b, 135-137, 144b-145b; the death and funeral of Cardinal Christopher Bainbridge (d. 14 July 1514). ff. 83-84; the Solemn Mass for the Peace of 1514 between Henry VIII and Louis XII of France. f. 85; the creation of Wolsey as a Cardinal. ff. 94b-96; the meeting between Leo X and Francis I of France at Bologna 1515. ff. 106b-116b; the canonisation of St Francis de Paula 1519. ff. 237b-247; the death and burial of Leo X.
Paper; ff. ii + 321. Contemporary foliation. Quarto. XVII cent. One hand throughout. On f. iii (former end-paper) is written 'Ludovico Aubery . . .
amico . . . 18', in a 17th-cent. hand: possibly Louis Aubery du Maurier, the French historian (1609-1687). Covers and spine from the contemporary white vellum binding, gilt-stamped. Numbered '77' on spine.
