PAPAL CONCLAVES: treatises on, and accounts of Papal conclaves: 1550-1590. Italian. Copies, c. 1600. Chiefly the work of Giovanni Francesco Lottini, a native of Volterra, who was secretary and conclavist to Cardinal Ascanio Sforza, subsequently a canon of the Vatican basilica and bishop elect of Conversano in 1560 (resigned 1561). The composition of Lottini's works is dated to 1566-1569, see Müller, p. 278. A memorandum (f. 1) in a contemporary hand, 'Ex apographis Melchioriis Guilandinii', suggests that art. 1 at least was copied from manuscripts of Melchior Guilandinus, naturalist (d.1589), who left his library to Venice. Contents lists in the same hand on the front cover and on f. 1 indicate that the following material was formerly in the volume, probably loosely inserted: (a) The 'Conclavista' of Felice Gualterio between artt. 2 and 3; (b) An anonymous account of the conclave of Pope Marcellus II.
1. ff. 2-25b. 'Precetti di Lottino In materia del Papato, e di Conclave, overo il Conclavista.' Beg. 'Io posso testificare come di cosa veduta.' Ends 'in quel modo che piace a lui.' Printed in C. Ventura, Thesoro Politico, Frankfort, 1610, pp. 444-464. For Felice Gualterio's reply, see Add. 48134, f. 248, and for a reply to both Lottini and Gualterio, see art. 3 below. Other copies of Lottini's 'Conclavista' in the Yelverton collection are: Add. MSS. 48074, art. 1 and 48134, art. 4. See also Add. 6901, f. 1. For accounts of Papal conclaves attributed to Lottini see art. 2.
2. ff. 26-92. Accounts of Papal conclaves. According to the tables of contents on ff. i and 1 these are by Lottini: see further below. As follows: (a) Pope Julius III (elected 7 Feb. 1550). (i) Account of the conclave, beg. 'Non è maraviglia, che di quanto fu operato.' Ends 'et benignamente Rendè loro la gratia sua,' followed by a list of the Cardinals at the death of Pope Paul III and brief notes on the subsequent election, etc. The account of the conclave is an Italian version of that by Bernardino Maffei, Cardinal 1549, beg. 'Mirum quidem esset, quod quum de pontificis maximi comitiis,' of which a copy is Add. 33370, ff. 130-141. The Italian version is also in Add. 8413, f. 142. Another Italian version not so close to Maffei's original is in Conclavi, pp. 123-134 (Merkle, pp. xxvii-xxx) and begins 'Morì Paulo III. alli 10. di Novembre 1549 . . . s'entrò nel Conclave' (p. 125). This seems to derive from the version beg. 'Fu assunto al Pontificato Paulo 3o nell' Anno del Signore 1534 . . . Si entro dunque nel Conclave,' which is in Add. 48074, art. 10 and in Add. MSS. 8412, f. 160, 8417, f. 486 and 28464, f. 26; also in Add. 8414, f. 94, where it begins '(Morto Paolo 3o) Era il Conclave diviso in 3 fattioni.' ff. 26-41b; (ii) Copy of a letter from Cardinal Alessandro Farnese to Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle, Bishop of Arras, Cardinal 1561, on the election of Pope Julius III; Rome, c. Feb. 1550. ff. 41b-43; (b) Pope Marcellus II (elected 9 April 1555). Beg. 'Il Cardinal di Ferrara dal primo di che torno.' Ends 'il nome del quale era stato chiamato dalla sua Nativita,' followed by a list of the Cardinals at the death of Julius III and brief notes on the subsequent election, etc. Also in Add. MSS. 48074, art. 11, 48154, art. 6, 6901, f. 19, 8413, f. 175, 8418, f. 99, 28464, f. 38 and Royal MS. 14 A.XXI, f. 196. Printed version in Conclavi, pp. 135-144. According to J. B. Saegmüller, Die Papstwahlen und die Staaten von 1447 bis 1555, Tübingen, 1890, p. 60, the account is by Lottini or taken from his notes. For other accounts of the conclave see Merkle, pp. 247-253 (by Angelo Massarelli) and 506-508 (by Ludovico Bondoni); see also Add. MSS. 8412, f. 176, 8414, f. 106 and 8418, f. 116. ff. 43b-49b; (c) Pope Paul IV (elected 23 May 1555). Beg. 'Si come fu vicino il conclave di Marcello ij a quello di Paulo.' Ends 'che erano stati cagione della sua elettione,' followed by a list of the Cardinals at the death of Marcellus II and brief notes on the subsequent election, etc. The account in Add. 48074, art. 12, beg. 'Il Conclave di Paulo 4o per essere stata cosi breve,' and ending 'che erono stati cagione di farlo Papa,', and also in Add. MSS. 6901, f. 23, 8413, f. 185, 8414, f. 110, 8416, f. 123 and 28464, f. 50, with a printed version in Conclavi, pp. 145-154, seems to derive from the present text. Saegmüller, pp. 60, 61, produces evidence for Lottini's authorship of the account. For other accounts see Merkle, pp. 260-267 (by Massarelli), and 509, 510 (by Bondoni). ff. 50-57b; (d) Pope Pius IV (elected 25 Dec. 1559). See Müller, op. cit. Beg. 'Il Conclave nel quale fu creato Pio quarto.' Ends 'fu eletto Medici Papa et chiamato Pio 4to,' followed by a list of the Cardinals at the death of Paul IV and brief notes on the subsequent election, etc. Also in Add. MSS. 8413, f. 197, 8418, f. 155 and 28464, f. 61. Another version beg. 'Nel presente conclave dove fu creato papa Pio quarto,' ending 'portato alle solite stanze Pontificie,' is in Add. 48074, art. 13 and also in Add. 8412, f. 184. See Conclavi, pp. 157-164. For other accounts of the conclave see: art. 4 below; Add. MSS. 48073, art. 15 (by A. Guido), 8414, f. 117, 8415, f. 1, 8416, f. 175; Merkle, pp. 332-342 (by Massarelli), pp. 516-532 (by Bondoni) and pp. 573-601 (by Panvinio). ff. 58-73b; (e) St Pius V (elected 7 Jan. 1566). Beg. 'Nel Conclave dove fu creto Papa Pio V.' Ends 'ambito il Papato, o altra dignita ecclesiastica,' followed by a list of the Cardinals at the death of Pius IV and brief notes on the subsequent election, etc. Corresponds with the account in Add. 48074, art. 14, which begins 'Nel presente Conclave, dove è stato creato Papa Pio quinto,' and ends as above. Other copies are in Add. MSS. 4350, art. 1, 8412, f. 192, 8413, f. 218, 8426, f. 1 and 28464, f. 69; and, with the passage 'Non è maraviglia' from the conclave of Julius III as a prologue (see above), in Add. MSS. 6901, f. 39 and 8418, f. 2. ff. 74-92.
3. ff. 96-109b. 'Consideratione intorno all' ultima scrittura venuta fuori intorno à quello che si deve fare nella sede vacante.' Beg. 'La Signoria Vostra me domanda quel ch'io senta della seconda scrittura'. Ends 'una assai lunga scrittura. Le bacio le mani et me le raccomando con tutto il cuore.' Other copies of the treatise are in Vat. MS. Vat.Lat. 10868, f. 89, where it follows the 'Conclavista' of Gualterio, and Paris B.N. MS. Ital.1469, where it is assigned to Lottini. On internal evidence this seems unlikely as it is a commentary on the two other treatises on conclaves, i.e. Lottini's and Gualterio's.
4. ff. 110-118. Account of the conclave for the creation of Pope Pius IV. Beg. 'Nei primi dì, che il Cardinale d'Augusta entrò in Conclave.' Ends 'si possono intendere da Pasquino, che liberamente le parla.' See further on the conclave of Pius IV, art. 2(d) above.
5. ff. 121-127b. Account of the conclave for the creation of Pope Gregory XIV (elected 5 Dec. 1590). Beg. 'A di, viij d'Ottobre entrarono in Conclave, liii Cardinali.' Ends 'dolci frutti della bontà, et santita sua, et cosi sia.' Also in Add. 8418, f. 312 and Vat. MS. Urb.Lat.844, f. 44, where it is attributed to Giovanni Botero. For other accounts of the conclave see Add. MSS. 48075, art. 4, 48082, art. 6, 8414, f. 129 and 8418, f. 350 (by Lelio Maretti). Maretti's account is partly printed in Pastor, xxii, pp. 440-443. ff. 122-127b.
Paper; ff. i + 131. 17th-cent. foliation throughout 1-129. Artt. 1 and 2 were originally foliated separately. Art. 2 bears original foliation 1-67 (ff. 26-92), continued (68-71) by the writer of the contents list on f. 1, who also supplies some foliation to art 1. Sm. folio. c. 1600. Three main Italian hands: artt. 1 and 2 in the same hand; artt. 3 and 4 (ff. 96-118) are in the same hand, see also Add. 48073, art. 1. The hand of the contents lists (f. 1 and front cover) also occurs on Add. MSS. 48068-48069 and 48073. Vellum binding. '108', back cover. Titled and numbered '78' on spine.
