ACCOUNTS OF PAPAL CONCLAVES; 1572-1623. Italian. Copies, early 17th cent. Contents list, f. v.
1. ff. 1-8. Pope Gregory XIII (13 May 1572). Beg. 'Voi havete aggiunto, per il fino à preghi.' Ends 'et reverita et amata la sua bontà.' This does not seem to be related to the account in Conclavi, pp. 187-191, which appears to derive from the description of the election which occurs in Add. MSS. 8412, f. 204, 8413, f. 249, 8418, ff. 57, 68, 72, 76 and 28464, f. 81.
2. ff. 9-14b. Pope Sixtus V (elected 24 April 1585). Beg. 'Domenica Alli sette d'Aprile 1585'. Ends 'quattro o cinque mila scudi l'anno,' followed by a list of the Cardinals at the time of the election. For other copies see Add. MSS. 48082, art. 5, 8412, f. 210, 8418, f. 162 and versions in 8418, ff. 86 and 95 and 28464, f. 89. Printed version in Conclavi, pp. 193-211.
3. ff. 15-27. Pope Urban VII (elected 15 Sept. 1590). Beg. 'Venerdi sette di settembre, 1590 cantatosi secondo il costume'. Includes an account of the pontificate and ends 'et more con il sacramento della estrema untione', followed by a list of the Cardinals at the election. Also in Add. 8412, f. 216 and a printed version in Conclavi, pp. 213-224. The version in Add. MSS. 48154, art. 5, 8418, f. 210 and 28464, f. 97, corresponds for the history of the conclave closely with the present account.
4. ff. 31-81. Pope Gregory XIV (elected 5 Dec. 1590). Beg. 'Giusto desiderio veramente, e laudabil Curiosità'. Ends 'il discorso et la prudenza civile', followed by a list of the Cardinals at the time of the election. Also in Add. MSS. 8412, f. 225 (with different beginning), 8418, f. 233, 8468, f. 45, 28464, f. 113 and 48082, art. 6, and printed in Conclavi, pp. 225-280. There is an English translation in Harley MS. 296, f. 55. For other accounts see Add. 48072, art. 5.
5. ff. 85-97. Pope Innocent IX (elected 29 Oct. 1591). Beg. 'Il Pontefice Romano, per che egli ha nel suo principato.' Ends 'senz' altro umilmente le fo reverenza'. Does not seem to be related to the account in Conclavi, pp. 281-289, MS. versions of which are Add. MSS. 8415, f. 321 and 8419, f. 3. For other accounts see Add. MSS. 8412, f. 262, 8414, f. 162, 8419, f. 16 and 28464, f. 173.
6. ff. 99-135. Pope Clement VIII (elected 30 Jan. 1592). (a) Beg. 'Desiderando V.S. sapere l'occorrenze del Conclave'. Ends 'lo portorno in San Pietro con le ceremonie solite.' This does not seem to be related to the account in Conclavi, pp. 291-304. The next item in the present MS. is another account of the election, and others are in Add. MSS. 6892, f. 183, 8412, f. 267, 8419, ff. 28, 50 and 28463, ff. 122, 170. ff. 99-106b; (b) Beg. 'E cosi giusta e curiosa domanda quella'. Ends 'e di tutto quello che io sono stato consapevole', followed by a list of the Cardinals at the election. Also in Add. 28464, f. 184. On internal evidence it seems to be by the conclavist of Cardinal Giulio-Antonio Santorio. ff. 109-135.
7. ff. 136-166b. Pope Leo XI (elected 1 April 1605). Beg. 'Era il Cardinale Aldobrandino uscito di Roma'. Ends 'la grandezza e purità de suoi heroici pensieri'. Also in Add. MSS. 8412, f. 281 and 28464, f. 214.
8. ff. 167-184b. Pope Paul V (elected 16 May 1605). Beg. 'Se mai a i tempi nri. se visto'. Ends 'quem elegerit omnipotenti suo digito indice.' Partly in Add. 28463, f. 178. For other accounts of the election see art. 9 and Add. 48106, art. 2. The account in Conclavi, pp. 347-372, beg. 'Se mai nelle tenebre delle confusi operationi' is also found in Add. MSS. 4350, f. 45, 8412, f. 307, 8419, f. 90 and 28464, f. 248.
9. ff. 186-191b.

Corresponds with the account in Add. 48154, art. 3.
