DIARY OF JOHANNES BURCHARD, liturgist and Papal Master of Ceremonies; 2 Dec. 1492-22 Feb. 1503. Latin. Copy, late 16th cent. For Burchard (d.1506) see DBI, xv, pp. 405-408. His complete 'Diary' runs from 21 Dec. 1483 to 27 April 1506 and was published by E. Celani, Johannis Burckardi Liber Natarum (Muratori, Città di Castello edn., xxxii, pt.1., 1913), 1906-1942 (index incomplete). For problems relating to the text of the 'Diary' see F. Wasner, 'Eine unbekannte Handschrift des Diarium Burckardi' in Historisches Jahrbuch, 83, 1964, pp. 300-331. For other copies of the whole 'Diary', see Add. MSS. 8437, 8438, 21562 and 26803-26807. For extracts relating to Papal conclaves, see Add. MSS. 48073, artt. 7, 9-10 and 48154, artt. 4, 8. Followed by the text of a Brief of Pope Alexander VI to the convent of St Mark, Florence, undated, but issued 8 Sept. 1497 (ff. 289-291b), another to Savonarola, 16 Oct. 1497 (ff. 291b-293), and Savonarola's reply to the Pope, 29 Sept. 1497 (ff. 293b-301).
Paper; ff. 302. 17th-cent. foliation. Folio. Late XVI cent. One hand throughout, which also appears in Add. MSS. 48121, artt. 8, 9, 24, 48132, ff. 506-574 and 48135, art. 1. Vellum binding, with the following numbers on the spine: '84'; '109' twice, cancelled, in the same hand as '84', probably a numbering error.
