- Title:
- Papers relating to the German Protestant states, 1563-1580
- Scope & Content:
-
Copies of papers concerning foreign affairs, chiefly with reference to the German Protestant states between 1563 and 1580. Alarmed by divisions between Lutherans and Calvinists in Germany, Queen Elizabeth I sent three missions to that country in 1577, with the aim of establishing a Protestant League in Europe: Sir Philip Sidney (1554–1586), author and courtier, from February-June; Dr Daniel Rogers (c. 1538–1591), diplomat and author, dispatched in June; and Robert Beale (1541–1601), administrator and diplomat, who received his instructions in August.
Beale was told to prevent a Lutheran assembly, planned to be held in Magdeburg in October that year, from taking place, and similarly to hinder a proposed Calvinist assembly at Frankfurt. Beale arrived in Germany in September and remained there until the end of December: he attended the Calvinist assembly at Frankfurt in September and visited the courts of the prominent Protestant princes. At this time the Lutheran party was attempting to define its doctrine: the result was the 'Book of Concord' or 'Formula of Concord' which was first printed at Dresden, in 1580.
