LLWYD, CHRONICLE OF WALES: the Chronicle of Wales to 1294 by Humphrey LLwyd, M.P. (d.1568), with other Welsh materials; 1559-1578. Partly Latin and Welsh. Copies. Headed by Beale (f. 4), 'A Collection of the History of Wales gathared out of Caradocus and other Britishe Authors by Humfry Lloyd'. On Llwyd see G. Gruffydd, 'Humphrey Llwyd of Denbigh - some documents and a catalogue', Trans. Denbighshire Hist. Soc., xvii, 1968, pp. 54-107, xviii, 1969, pp. 178-179.
1. ff. 4-105b. Chronicle of Wales, completed by Llwyd at London 17 July 1559 (colophon by Sir Robert Cotton in another copy, Cotton MS. Caligula A.VI, ff. 2-221, see further below). The text, a translation of the Middle Welsh Brut y Tywysogyon, incorporating a version of the 'Description of Cambria' by Sir John Price (d.1555, on whom see N. R. Ker in The Library, 5th ser., x, 1955, pp. 1-24), was the basis of David Powel's Historie of Cambria, 1584 (STC 4606). The present MS. is close to the printed work, but in the latter the 'Description of Wales' precedes the chronicle, and the material for the period after 1260 (ff. 100-105b) is abbreviated. The present MS. was probably copied from Caligula A.VI, which has marginal annotations by John Dee, many of which it reproduces (see, for example,
ff. 17, 18b, and Caligula A.VI, ff. 29, 29b), and some of which were made after the appearance of the printed edition. On the relationship between Caligula A.VI and Bodleian Library MS. Ashmole 847, a copy of the former by Robert Glover, see I. M. Williams, 'Ysgolheictod Hanesyddol yn yr Unfed Ganrif ar Bymtheg', Llên Cymru, ii, 1950, pp. 111-124, 209-214, and John Dee's Library Catalogue, ed. R. J. Roberts and A. G. Watson, Bibliographical Soc. 1983, M25 and M52. Another copy is Nat. Library of Wales MS. Llanstephan 177, see J. G. Evans, Report on Manuscripts in the Welsh Language, HMC, ii, pt.2, 1903, p. 768.
2. f. 106. Poems in Welsh, with English translations: (a) entitled 'Spiritus Grono ap Ednyuet aparauit super mortem Principis et ita affatur'. Beg. 'Dowed i wyr Gwynedd galon galed'. Poem and translation appear as a marginal and insert in Caligula A.VI, ff. 217b-218; (b) Beg. 'Tri mab oedd y Rodri Mewn Tremyn y Kayd'. See D. Dumville, 'The 'Six' Sons of Rhodri Mawr . . . ', Cambridge Medieval Celtic Studies, 4, 1982, p. 12. The translation is preceded by the memorandum 'Morice Kyphen did thus translate them 12 februarij 1578 after Thomas Griffith had geven them to Mr. J. Dee of Mortlake his cousyn.' This material, with Dee's original note on the translation, is in Caligula A.VI, f. 42.
3. ff. 115-125b. 'The winning of the lordship of Glamorgan', including a pedigree of the Stradling family, compiled by Edward Stradling, knt. 1573, together with a copy of a covering letter from Stradling to Sir William Cecil; [1561-1566?]. Printed by Powel as addenda in the Historie of Cambria, pp. 122-141, where the composition is dated 1572 (p. 141). It appears from the present MS. that the work was compiled earlier, before the death of Sir Thomas Stradling, Edward Stradling's father, in 1571, see f. 125b and Stradling Correspondence . . . , ed. J. M. Traherne, 1840, p. ix. Dated 1561-1566 in the edition by B. Ll. James from Harley MS. 368 in Rice Merrick Morganiae Archaiographia, South Wales Record Soc., i, 1983, App. 2, pp. 147-164.
