RECORDS, ETC., OF THE FRENCH AND ITALIAN PROTESTANT CHURCHES IN LONDON; 1561-1590. Latin and Italian. Partly printed.
1. ff. 1-14b. Forma Politiae Ecclesiasticae, nuper institutae Londini in coetu Gallorum: Nicolao Gallasio authore. Excussum Londini in officina Ioannis Daij Typographi, 1561. Latin. Printed. STC 6774.5. The author, Nicolas des Gallars, Sieur de Saules, was elected Minister of the French Church in London on 26 April and instituted by Edmund Grindal, Bishop of London, who was Superintendent of the Church, 24 June 1560. He left England in the summer of 1563, see further Actes du Consistoire de l'Église Française de Threadneedle Street, Londres, edited by E. Johnston, Publications of the Huguenot Society of London, xxxviii, 1937, pp. xv-xxv. For the history of the Church and for des Gallars see F. de Schnickler, Les Églises du Refuge en Angleterre, Paris, 1892 (i, ch. iii for the period under des Gallars), and
P. Collinson, Archbishop Grindal, 1979, pp. 130-148. The Forma Politiae was apparently completed 21 July 1560 (see f. 15b) and has a dedication to Grindal (ff. 3, 3b). There is a version of it at Cambridge, Corpus Christi College MS. 340, p. 397. The name 'Jo. Feildus' on the title-page (f. 2) of the Forma Politiae suggests it belonged to the Puritan divine, John Feilde al. Field.
2. ff. ii, 17-123. Minute-book of the Consistory of the Italian Protestant Church in London; 16 Sept. 1570-20 Jan. 1590. Italian. On the Church see L. Firpo 'La chiesa italiana di Londra nel cinquecento e i suoi rapporti con Ginevra, in Ginevra e l'Italia (Raccolta di Studi promossa dalla Facoltà Valdese di Teologia di Roma), Florence, 1959, pp. 307-412, particularly
pp. 355-410 which are largely based on the present manuscript. For a description of the MS. see p. 357n, but a new foliation has been given since the one used by Firpo. For Giovanni Battista Aureli, the minister of the church 1570-1590, see the article in DBI, iv, pp. 589-590. Signatures of the elders of the Church are on ff. 18b and 32b. A good deal of the MS. is in the hand of one of these, Paul Typoots of Brabant, a scrivener. On ff. ii-iib is a draft of the entries for 7, 16 and 20 Jan. 1590 (see ff. 81b-83). The note-book was purchased for 4d. on 20 August 1570 (f. 109b).
Paper; ff. ii + 123. Octavo. Late XVI cent. Originally bound in vellum with the title 'Ecclesia Londino-Italica' on the cover (see f. i). Spine: 'A C', '83', '105'. The former binding incorporated a leaf of a 15th-cent. Sarum antiphoner (now Add. 48196 C, f. 59) containing antiphons and responses at Lauds for the office of a confessor.
